<strong>must not<\/strong>, under foreseeable conditions of normal use, <strong>release substances known to be toxic,<\/strong> toxic for reproduction, carcinogenic, mutagenic, allergenic, corrosive, sensitising or irritating.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, a concrete example is the possible presence of hexavalent chromium particles in leather used to produce protective gloves or , ,  worn and used for style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the production of enamels and paints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glass colouring<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">textile production<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the tanning of hides\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2026..<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img may occur through the skin coming into direct contact with the tanned leather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms and signs of exposure and contact with chromium<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms and signs from exposure to chromium, via the skin, respiratory tract, etc. include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Risks and effects of exposure to hexavalent chromium<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The US Environmental Protection Agency<\/em> (USEPA, 1998) has recognised the high toxicity of hexavalent chromium, classifying it as <strong>carcinogenic to humans and the environment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.covalsafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/download-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">The results of the studies also do not rule out a link between cancer and repeated dermal exposure, while the <strong>skin-sensitising properties<\/strong> of chromium VI are already established, even at a rather low concentration level. In this case, the risk is that of <strong>absorption of the substance through the skin<\/strong>, again affecting workers who are exposed to the substance, but also the general population, by coming into contact with <strong>tanned skin.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>EN ISO 21420:2020 imposes a limit on Chromium VI in leather<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This standard defines various <\/span><b>indispensable requirements for protective gloves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among which we would like to emphasise that of<\/span><b> Material Harmlessness.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, the standard requires tests to detect the presence of the following substances, which may be present within minimum levels\u00a0<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chromium VI, in all leathers, maximum limit 3 mg\/kg<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nickel release (for metallic components)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pH value\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azo dyes (applicable to all dyed leathers and fabrics)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dimethylformamide (for materials containing polyurethane)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (applicable to rubbers and plastics) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b> For Coval Safety, safety comes first<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.covalsafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/42VB15-3-1-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"> day Coval is dedicated to ensuring the safety and health of all users of its PPE.
