Sustainability and safety at work: a socio-ecological approach for human well-being and the protection of the planet

There are 3 fundamental factors for talking about sustainability in the working environment and they form the acronym ESG, namely:

  • Environment
  • Social
  • Governance

In other words, we can speak of three types of sustainability:

  • Environmental: concerned with the responsible use of natural resources and the management of waste or greenhouse gas emissions
  • Economic: aimed at steady economic growth, to generate income and create jobs
  • Social: to ensure health and safety, while also focusing on the working conditions of employees or the contribution to the development of local communities

That is why we also speak in business strategies of the 3Ps Strategy: Profit, Planet and People.

All these elements, linked together, must be implemented simultaneously and constantly to ensure the health and safety not only of the individual, but of the environment itself. For this to be possible, it is necessary that the companies where individuals work on a daily basis also make their own contribution with sustainable and targeted actions.

What are the mandatory sustainable actions that companies take for safety in the workplace

At corporate level, there are procedures, rules and behaviours required to ensure the safety of employees and the environment. Some of these behaviours are regularised by mandatory regulations, which ownership is obliged to comply with as a legal obligation. Consequently, if these regulations are followed correctly, it means that certain sustainability actions are already in place.

Sustainability and safety at work: which voluntary sustainable actions

As already explained, there are sustainable actions dictated by legal obligations for companies, but there are also voluntary choices that companies can make to create a true identity of social and environmental respect and that bring various benefits to both the individual and the environment.

This type of action can be recognised by the company by means of certifications, linked to occupational health and safety and the environment, and which aim to produce a sort of Sustainability Report, representing the public image of the efforts and commitment implemented by the company to respect health and safety in the working environment and beyond.

Some of the most important sustainable impact certifications include:

  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification
  • ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Certification

Sustainable safety actions: what are the benefits for the company

The obvious increase in companies supporting and pursuing this type of action is also due to the fact that this type of choice brings with it a number of benefits, such as:

  • Make a positive impression on new employees and/or customers, who are often sensitive to this type of issue, thus improving corporate reputation
  • Stimulate loyalty with partners
  • Create new business opportunities
  • Reduce costs in the long term
  • Valuing employees, making them more productive and attracting new talent

With this in mind, one can see how important it is for a healthy company to strike a balance between economic advantage and social-environmental impact in order to create an efficient, productive and at the same time sustainable workplace.

Coval Safety and sustainability policies

Even small daily choices have a big impact on the environment: a quality glove lasts longer and this leads to less waste.

Every day, at Coval Safety we work to ensure the safety and health of all users of our PPE, and we make sure that we produce gloves and garments with high quality raw materials. This is to ensure a longer PPE lifetime and more sustainability. Find out how HERE.

This is how Coval Safety produces quality heat-resistant gloves, ensuring less product waste:

  • Forging strong partnerships with the best leather suppliers (we operate in Italy’s largest tanning district)
  • Implementing periodic laboratory tests to ensure the harmlessness of the leather and the lowest environmental impact

By following these principles, in the long run, the user’s savings are evident. Just think that a Coval welding glove lasts up to three times longer than a low-quality glove.

This is proof that a longer lasting glove leads to less waste of raw materials which, in turn, represents an economic saving for the company.

It is therefore essential to choose high quality raw materials and follow serious sustainability protocols. To find out more about the degree of sustainability of leathers click HERE.
